Most BO7 classes get built from the primary weapon outward, and yeah, that's where the shiny attachment grind lives. But I've seen loads of players throw away close fights because the secondary slot was an afterthought. If you're even thinking about stepping into sweaty public matches or warming up in a CoD BO7 Bot Lobby, treat your sidearm like part of the plan, not decoration. A pistol isn't there to look nice on the loadout screen; it's there to bail you out when the game gets messy.

The swap that saves you

Everybody knows the rule, then forgets it the second things get loud: switching is faster than reloading. You'll feel it most in tight rooms, doorways, stairwells. You whiff a couple shots, they whiff a couple shots, and then you hear that empty click. If you stay on your primary, you're basically choosing to lose. The better habit is simple—swap instantly, finish the fight, then reload when you've got a second. It's not glamorous, but it turns those "I almost had him" moments into actual kills.

Heavy primaries need a safety net

If you're running an LMG, a chunky shotgun build, or a slow sniper, the reload can feel like a punishment. That's where a quick sidearm earns its keep. You don't need it to outgun an AR at mid-range; you need it to fire right now. Pick something that doesn't kick like a mule, and that you can track with while you're strafing. And don't ignore the draw time—some pistols feel like they teleport into your hands, others feel sluggish. That little difference shows up when someone slides into your lane.

Movement and map control

There's also the running speed. Pulling out a pistol to rotate is just smart. Crossing a risky sightline, hopping to a new heady, sprinting for a hardpoint tick—do it with the secondary out and you'll get there cleaner. You'll also catch more weak enemies trying to escape and heal. A lot of players chase with their primary up, moving like they're stuck in mud, then wonder why the kill gets away. Fast hands and faster feet win more than people admit.

Make it muscle memory

Don't pick a sidearm because the blueprint looks cool in the menu. Pick the one you can actually control when your heart rate's up. Spend a few minutes practicing swap-and-shoot until it's automatic, then build your class around covering gaps: long-range primary plus close-range pistol, or slow reload plus instant backup.
