Research suggests that replacing a radar sensor is only half the job; proper calibration is critical to restoring its full functionality. Automotive radar sensors calibration ensures that the sensor's field of view is correctly aligned with the vehicle's geometry, allowing ADAS features to operate as designed. Failure to calibrate can result in false warnings, delayed emergency braking, or complete system failure, compromising safety.

There are two primary calibration methods: static calibration using a fixed target and dynamic calibration performed on the road. Static calibration is more common after sensor replacement or bumper repairs. It involves placing a calibrated target—such as a radar cone target, which can cost around $491 —at a precise distance and angle in front of the vehicle. A diagnostic tool then aligns the sensor's readings to this reference point . Dynamic calibration, alternatively, involves driving behind a reference vehicle at a specific speed, allowing the system to self-calibrate using real-world data. For example, the Foton H438C00000028 radar requires the vehicle to be driven behind a reference vehicle at 50 km/h for 30 seconds to complete a dynamic calibration .

The vertical angle of the sensor is particularly critical; it must be within ±1° of horizontal for accurate object detection . The calibration process also addresses the sensor's ability to detect obstacles at the correct distances and angles, ensuring that its field of view matches the vehicle's dimensions and intended safety envelope. As vehicles become more reliant on sensor fusion—combining radar, camera, and LiDAR data—precise calibration of each sensor becomes even more vital. The automotive radar sensors market continues to grow as ADAS features become standard, and the demand for specialized calibration services and equipment is expected to rise accordingly.
