PoE 2 U4GM Budget Cluster Grenade Ballista Totem Build

If you want a cheap mapping build that can blow up entire packs without juggling a complicated skill rotation, the Ballista Totem Cluster Grenade build is worth a look in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5. It uses the Mercenary's Gemling Legionnaire ascendancy and turns Mortar Cannon into a reliable source of automated grenade damage. You place the totems, move out of danger, and let them handle most of the work. If you are short on currency, POE 2 Orbs can also help fill in a few early gear gaps.

How the Build Works

The main skill is Mortar Cannon, which summons a Ballista Totem that fires socketed grenade skills. When paired with Cluster Grenade, each attack creates a large explosion and sends additional grenades across the area.

This gives the build excellent clear speed without requiring constant aiming. Against bosses and tough rares, positioning becomes more important because overlapping grenade explosions can deal significantly more damage.

Main Skill Setup

For the core six-link, start with:

• Mortar Cannon
• Cluster Grenade
• Urgent Totems
• Payload
• Multishot
• Magnified Area as a later upgrade

Urgent Totems makes your turrets faster to deploy and improves their attack speed. Payload adds repeated grenade activations, although the cooldown penalty means it works best once your setup is developed. Multishot adds more projectiles, while Magnified Area is useful when you want even better screen coverage.

Budget Weapon and Gear

For a low-cost version, look for a Siege Crossbow with the implicit modifier “Grenade Skills fire an additional Projectile.” This is one of the most useful stats for the build because extra projectiles improve both clear speed and damage potential.

Prioritize added physical damage and increased physical damage first. Attack speed, Dexterity, critical chance, and life on kill are good secondary stats. Two Perfect Iron Runes are also a practical early investment.

If you need to finish your starter gear without spending too much, buy POE 2 Orbs and focus your spending on upgrades that directly improve grenade damage rather than chasing expensive perfect rares.

Defensive Setup

Defense is where this build becomes especially comfortable for mapping. The unique body armour Reverie allows non-unique life flasks to apply constantly, but removes normal flask usage. With a strong Ultimate Life Flask and enough life recovery, you can maintain steady regeneration while moving around the map.

A Shavronne's Satchel is a strong later upgrade because it can extend this recovery setup toward Energy Shield.

For rare equipment, look for:

• Maximum Life
• Elemental Resistances
• Armour
• Evasion
• Movement Speed

An Idol of Uldurn is another useful budget option. It can allocate Devastation and help increase your totem limit, giving the build more firepower on the battlefield.

Passive Tree and Ascendancy

The passive tree should focus on grenade damage, totem bonuses, attack damage, flask recovery, and general defenses. You do not need to build around expensive damage nodes at the beginning; getting enough life, resistances, and totem capacity will make early mapping much smoother.

For Gemling Legionnaire, Gem Studded and Advanced Thaumaturgy are particularly useful. They reward a strong collection of support gems and give the build plenty of room to scale as your equipment improves.

How to Play

The gameplay is simple:

1. Place Mortar Cannon totems ahead of you.
2. Keep moving while they attack nearby enemies.
3. Circle dangerous rares instead of standing still.
4. Replace totems as you move through the map.
5. Against bosses, place them close enough for Cluster Grenades to overlap.

You can also use Oil Grenade, Thunderstorm, or Shockwave Totem for extra control and utility. These skills are helpful, but they are not the reason the build works.

For players looking for cheap POE 2 Orbs, it is better to spend your early currency on weapon damage, defensive upgrades, and key build uniques rather than trying to perfect every slot immediately. The build already performs well with reasonably priced equipment.

Is This Build Worth Playing?

The Ballista Totem Cluster Grenade setup is a good choice for players who enjoy automated damage, fast mapping, and a more relaxed playstyle. It can start coming together around level 65 and does not require an expensive collection of items to feel effective.

It will not suit everyone. Players who prefer direct, high-precision single-target combat may find the turret playstyle too passive. But if you like dropping artillery and watching enemies disappear under a wave of explosions, this build is a lot of fun.

With sensible upgrades and some POE 2 Orbs for sale to round out your budget, the build can provide a comfortable route into endgame mapping while leaving plenty of room for future improvements.
