The activated sludge process is effective and well-understood but requires large footprint and produces sludge. The membrane bioreactor (MBR) is the fastest-growing technology: it combines biological treatment with membrane filtration (ultrafiltration or microfiltration). The membrane replaces the clarifier, producing high-quality effluent with low suspended solids and bacteria. MBRs have a smaller footprint and can operate at higher mixed liquor concentrations. However, they are more expensive and require membrane cleaning.

The industrial wastewater treatment market also includes moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) (plastic carriers with attached biofilm), trickling filters (rotating distributor sprays wastewater over a bed of rocks or plastic media), and rotating biological contactors (RBC) (discs rotating through wastewater). These are less common but are used for smaller flows or for specific industries.

As the industrial wastewater treatment market continues to evolve, the focus will be on zero liquid discharge (ZLD) (recovering all water and leaving only solid waste), on energy efficiency (reducing aeration energy, recovering biogas from anaerobic treatment), and on resource recovery (recovering nutrients, metals, and energy from wastewater).
